School Board Election Open Thread

I went to a School Board candidate forum at Glenwood Library hosted by the West Howard County Democratic Club tonight. All of the candidates, other that Roger Lerner, were there. I am interested in hearing your thoughts on the race and which candidates you like and why. As you know I strongly think Di Zou would be a great addition to the board and I found it interesting that Di was the only candidate to mention the need for vo-tech in his opening remarks.

So for those who were at the candidate forum, what did you think? For everyone else what do you think the needs of the school system are? Which candidates are speaking to the issues you care about?

There is to much. Well I did this I did that. When it comes down to it what will you do to make the Board Better. I could care less what committees you served on, and what ptsa you were on. I just want you get results.

I wasn't able to attend - what types of questions did they have? Did everyone have a chance to respond to every question? If so, didn't that get overly repetitive?
Did the candidates have a way to differentiate themselves?

I like to think that I have a strong record of getting results: purchasing a finical management system to increase oversight and rapidly implementing full day kindergarten over the objections of the former Superintendent; hiring Sydney Cousin; creating the Internal Auditor office; creating the ombudsman position; funding new positions to focus on Hispanic student achievement for the first time. These are just a few. Given the strong likelihood of a Mary Kay Sigaty County Council victory, I also will provide continuity on a board that (even if Pat and I win in November) will now be made up of a majority of new members.

Remember in November – Keep Kaufman on the BOE!

hello evan,

it was good to talk with you last nite at the candidate forum.

i thought your readers would be interested in knowing that precinct by precinct results are now available at the board of elections office for $25.

but, before you rush out to purchase your very own copy, i picked up a copy yesterday and, with the help of my campaign staff, uploaded a copy to my campaign web page ---

I second the enough of the I've been on 30 PTA's,etc speal. What have you actually done? Good or bad past history on the Board? What is your real experience working with people? How are you going to deal with $25-$30 million less next budget year? Are you going to continue the current redistricting practices? Are you going to fight to raise teacher pay and retain good teachers? Do you have a good working relationship with new Council & Executive candidates? Explain how you would deal with SMS. Enough with the fluff already. Time to get real.
