County Exec Race

So I have been processing the number from last week’s primary and I noticed that the numbers are much worse for Ken Ulman than even the 21.4% for Harry Dunbar might indicate. Those numbers don’t count the number of Dems who chose not to vote in the county exec race. Often this is done as a protest vote in non-competitive primaries to send a message to candidates that voters are concerned with the presumed nominee. In this case 27,295 Democrats voted in the primary with the vote breakdown being:

Harry Dunbar: 5,256

Ken Ulman: 19,295

No Vote: 2,744

This means that 8,000 Democrats (an amazingly round number) chose not to vote for Ken Ulman out of the 27,295 that made the effort to go vote last Tuesday. Doing the math that means that 29.3% chose not to vote for Ken.

If Ken doesn’t recognize the danger he faces in these numbers he is less smart than I have always thought he was. Ken needs to stop running a front porch campaign and start convincing voters he is listening to their concerns and has a record he is proud of. Lucky for Ken he and other candidates have a great opportunity to do this in the Bloggers Candidates Forum, which will be a way candidates can engage with voters directly, unfiltered by the media. All candidates’ responses will be posted in full and unedited and there is no limit on length. Any voter can then comment on those responses and post their own questions that the candidates can then answer. I hope candidates and voters take advantage of this opportunity.

I can't wait to read the responses to the Bloggers Forum questionnaire! I have no doubt that a side-by-side comparison of the records and views of Ken Ulman and Chris Merdon will show that Ulman is by far the best candidate for the job of County Executive.

Feldmark was the first indication that Ulman was in big trouble. Ulman has offended many in his own party, particularly in Columbia. Voters sometimes vote to vote against someone not just for someone.

Ulman's website says he was "Secretary of the cabinet" in Maryland. Really? No record of this in the Maryland state archives! Below is a link to a list of state Departments - which agency did Ulman head up?

I'd vote for the candidate with the real record of accomplishment. If this guy wants a future in politics, he should dispense with the distortions...

Was that the kitchen or bathroom cabinet?

Ulman's jobs sound made up to me. Then again I bet'd be easy to get a nice state job if your Daddy was head of the Maryland Racing Commission!

How much money is Ulman going to spend to win the election? Who is paying for all his ads? Where is this money coming from? Is this a stepping stone to higher office? Personally I doubt Ulman's commitment to the job.

Resume-padding is a no-no, but my main objection with Ulman is his overall lack of experience (even with the possible embellishments). He is 32 years old and has less than 1 term in the County Council.

I find it fascinating that one of the richest counties in the country would even consider electing someone as young as Ken Ulman. At least Merdon has 2 terms under his belt (that's twice the amount of experience).

I don't know much about the independent candidate (can't recall his name) but he should tout his experience more.

The allegation has been made that in 2002 Ulman was being paid by his father so he could campaign full-time. Isn't that a campaign contribution? Is that disclosed anywhere?
