Go Dems

A friend sent me some up lifting information for Howard County Democrats

January 1 thru March 31, there was a drastic change in political party affiliation.

GOP lost 480, gained 436, for a net loss of 44.

Unaffiliated lost 1335, gained 208, for a net loss of 1127.

Dems lost 292, gained 1484, for a net gain of 1192.

The miscellaneous missing numbers were for Greens, Libertarians, etc.

The Board of Elections was flooded with people who realized they had no
voice in the choice of candidates if they stayed away from the parties.

Unless I've missed something, those Dem gains could be entirely new residents. Losses on the others could be entirely resident terminations.

It makes a difference. If people are in-place changing affiliation, there's an important trend. If people are only re-registering because of a residence change and choosing party based on this very interesting Dem primary year - not so important.

My take is fewer new residents, and more young people registering for their licences and to vote at the same time. Most first time registers don't realize Independents can't vote in primary, so when they past their driving test and register to vote at the same time, Independent is the cool thing to do. Now the young want to vote, more than in previous elections, and so in my opinion they change registration.

The gain is likely because many independents wanted to vote in the Dem primary AGAINST Hillary Clinton. Obama is gaining the support of many independents, who don't want dirty-politics-as-usual figures like Clinton and McCain in the oval office. Similarly, Libertarians went Republican to support Ron Paul, though obviously not in as high a force.
