Upgrading Howard County Blog

So Blogger (the program that powers this blog) was acting up the last two days and would not let me post unless I upgraded to their new version (something I have been putting off since I have been to busy to examine the pros and cons of the new system). The end result is I finally upgraded today and may be playing around with the site in the near future to see how to improve it. The other bi-product of the upgrade is that since I am the owner of this blog it has kicked all my guestbloggers who have not yet upgraded off the list on the masthead. I think that as they upgrade their accounts to the new version of Blogger their names will reappear. Ken, our most reliable guestblogger, has already upgraded so his name appeared automatically on the masthead.

Is anyone going to talk about what happened at Mt. Hebron while 20 people watched?

No. It does not reflect the school's values, it does not reflect the other students values. It's one of the odd, strange, regretable tragedies that now we all have to live with.

Anon: I agree with Jim. There's not much to say about it. Terrible, unfortunate, out of character...they all fit. Is there any insight to be gained from the situation? I'm not sure, but I don't think so.

Perhaps we could start a larger discussion about police priorities, as I read in the Sun yesterday that at the time of the beating police were breaking up a party of underage drinkers, which is clearly less important than breaking up a deadly brawl. But without someone else reporting it, how could we expect police to have responded any earlier to this?

I should have said, police were breaking up a party of underage drinkers less than a mile away.

or hurt or hurt or killed someone, we would be discussing the police Depts. failure to break up the party.

The police must have known about the under aged drinking party. I have heard no evidence suggesting that the police knew of the brawl beforehand.

Blogger trashed my comment! There was a previous paragraph!

And I am too tired to fix it . . .

I probably should have made more clear that I'm not blaming the police for not breaking up the brawl.

Presumably, someone called them about the underage drinking, while no one called (until well after the fact) about the brawl. Perhaps a better discussion could be had about when and why (or why not) people call 911.

Wonderful. What we have is a group of bloggers unwilling to discuss something because it was not normal.

I don't get it. What is there to talk about? Should we post long, hand wringing screeds about the downfall of our youth and society? Call for the a law banning underage possession of baseball bats?

These are not productive discussions. Perhaps there are some we can have about this incident, but I don't know what they are and you're not helping me find them.

From first commenter:

For the record, I did not claim anything about this situation. There was no claim that the incident was a reflection of the area, the county , or youth.

This is exactly how misinterpretations can re-write documented history, even though there is no basis in anything factual, or even explicable.

My apologies if I misinterpreted something you said.

Not sure if anyone saw, but the Sun reports today that the same kids involved in the Mt. Hebron brawl scuffled the week before, too.

I guess we can't talk about this because of fear on where the discussion would lead, though all of Maryland can read about it on the front page of the Maryland section in the Sunday Sunpapers.

Also, it's too important to impune Tom Berkhouse, so energies are being spent on that activity.

Anon 5:51 I may have sit the pace for this discussion with my comment on 11:42. This was my own reaction, not meant to dictate to others how they may express their feelings. Be independent in mind and heart, lead the discussion where you please, it may help us all.

Anon 5:51: The floor is yours. If you want a discussion, start one. All you've done so far is start a discussion about why there is no discussion.

Personally, I'm not happy about the way this incident is being covered and find it interesting that it's not being called gang-related, considering we have two groups of teenagers engaged in an on-going fued. I wonder if that has anything to do with the race of these kids?

And I think it's crazy that Klink's friends have set up a "Free Klink" website.

But I don't think these are points that fit into what I usually write about on my blog. They're more local-TV-newsy and reactionary than what I try to focus on. I'm often wrong, though, and welcome a substantive discussion.

Please don't bring Tom Berkhouse into this. The only energy I expend on him is to point out where he lies about me. I cannot stop others from commenting on him, nor can I force them to talk about something they don't want to talk about.

If this is really an important issue to you, chime in with substance and people will respond.
