Rank the Worst Gerrymanders

For some fun before I write about Metro again I thought we should play: "Rank the Worst Gerrymanders" inspired by our very own MD-3.

How you play: Look at the congressional district maps below and in the comments section list the districts from with worst gerrymander last. Feel free to discuss your thoughts on the districts as well.

Here are your options:

My votes are for:

5) MD 2
4) NY 8
3) IL 4
2) MD 3
1) NC 12

These are a disgrace! What are we thinking when we look at these and say - oh that looks right... ???

AZ-2, MD-2, MD-3, IL-4, NY-8, NC-12. Anytime a district has to shrink down to the width of a highway connecting two populated areas in order to remain "contiguous" is absolutely ridiculous.

Best post ever! They should have an award for this.

IL 4
MD 2
MD 3
AZ 2
IL 17
NJ 13

Howard County District 1 is a good example too. Not as bad as IL 4.

The amazing thing is that AZ-02 was made by one of those "neutral redistricting commissions" that are supposed to be a silver bullet for gerrymandering . . .

I spent a year in Sterling, Illinois (part of IL 17). I vote for that on home bias. This poor, Midwest town of 15,000 is actually represented by three Congressional Districts (14, 16 and 17) which are Hastert, Manzullo and Evans (he has his own personal sham of disenfranchising voters following this year's primary).

NC-12
The 3 NY Districts
AZ-02
IL-04
IL-17

But all are worthy nominees.

David K.,

Thanks! I will keep this up so more people can vote and then I will put up my personal thoughts.

They're all bad, but it shows what redistricters can get away with when doing it for federal office as opposed to state office. Maryland legislative redistricting wasn't anywhere near as bad as for the congressional districts, yet the state court struck it down.
