I had a conversation yesterday with a Columbia pioneer who expressed concern that the land swap between the school system and a church for land on 175 and Tamar for land in Marriotsville might not follow the covenants or vision of Columbia. Has anyone looked into this?

i.e. Rouse didn't believe that individual churches should be built in the New Town- that they should be part of an Interfaith center or community. There are no churches in NT ( a couple on outparcels). Does NT zoning and covenants even allow a church to be built as a separate entity?

It is definitely contrary to the vision, but I don't know about the underlying law and regulations.

Anybody know about this?

It also begs the question what happens if some parties' push for a denser Columbia succeeds and additional schools are then needed in Columbia. Where would the school that would've been placed at that location then be placed? Would county-owned park land in Columbia then be sacrificed? Or will existing schools be supersized even more, resulting in a lower quality educational experience?

I have heard through the Columbia grapevine that Bill Santos has been very interested in this subject in the past so he might be the best person to ask.

I agree with you that one of the integral parts of achieving Rouse's vission has been the positive interactions created by the Interfaith Centers. I personally have very fond memories of the Oakland Mills Meeting House and how it brought people of many faiths together to understand each others faith.

Bill isn't a lawyer, nor has he ever commented about the legal aspect, and I haven't heard him say anything except the fact that he supports the Rouse vision of religion in Columbia. A lot of kids who grew up here really like the Interfaith Center concept. The idea that a Unitarian, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, etc service would be going on in the next room - it's a really cool sense of community.

As far as the parcel goes, drive by it - I for one can't see it practically being used for a school given current construction and play space requirements. The Howard County Public Schools seem to think that the land is pretty useless to them - but they really want the parcel up in West County.
