The new Howard County school board
The primary election made clear that there were only seven viable candidates for election to the county Board of Education this year. Now four of them (Frank Aquino, Sandra French, Patricia Gordon, and Larry Cohen have won four-year terms on the board and a fifth (Ellen Flynn Giles, barring a miracle for Janet Siddiqui in the absentee vote count) has won a two-year term. The seventh, incumbent Josh Kaufman, finished suffiently behind Siddiqui that he's no longer in the running for reelection. In my view, he hurt his prospects for election by jointly sponsoring some program or project (I don't remember what it was) with Republican County Executive candidate Chris Merdon in such a way that made it look like he supported Merdon. That was unfortunate for him.
The expected victory by school board member Mary Kay Sigaty in her Council race means there will soon be a vacancy (to be filled by the County Executive) for her seat. Whoever gets it would finish out her term, which ends in 2008. I'll bet it's Siddiqui's if she wants it.
In 2008, there will be only three school board seats to be filled (that of incumbent Diane Mikulis, Giles, and whoever gets the Sigaty seat).

I wouldn't rule out Siddiqui completely or say it would require a absentee miracle. I know she sent out literature to people who requested absentee ballots. A couple of my friends got them. There are 18000 absentee ballots coming in I think and she is only down by 1261 votes, so it is not unlikely for her to get the 5th seat.
You're right. I underestimated the number and effect of absentee ballots, both here and elsewhere. I know they had a big effect in Anne Arundel County legislative races.
There are over 9,000 absentee ballots that have been counted in Howard County. The statewide office totals show up under the state totals. Wonder if the county webmaster is taking the weekend off again. :-O
I think I got the number of absentee ballots wrong, but I'm pretty sure its over 10,000 just don't know how much over. It's still a lot.
Larry Carson reports "According to a county elections board tally of 10,099 ballots completed Friday afternoon," "In the nonpartisan school board election, Janet Siddiqui, who finished sixth, gained 78 votes on fifth-place finisher Ellen Flynn Giles, although Giles is still more than 1,200 votes ahead. The five top finishers for school board win seats, though the person in fifth place must run again in two years for a full, four-year term."
Stopped by the Board of Elections to get the absentee votes.
Aquino 44656 13.54%
French 43921 13.32%
Gordon 38570 11.70%
Cohen 37792 11.46%
Giles 35513 10.77%
Giles still leads Siddiqui by 1183 votes with only provisionals and ABS2 votes left to count.
Do you know what the rest of the counts are? or how long until they finish counting everything?
Di-
MD BOE website shows HoCo's provisionals aren't completed yet.

Can't get the election calendar to load but I think Friday is ABS2 counting day. Not sure but I think 11/17 sticks out as the day all counting is supposed to be done.
Go Terps
This is what the Howard County Board of Elections site has listed with one precinct (probably overseas absentees) to go:
Aquino 45173 13.51%
French 44521 13.325
Gordon 39147 11.71%
Cohen 38328 11.46%
Giles 36024 10.77%
Siddiqui 34868 10.43%
Kaufman 33029 9.88%
Dyer 25820 7.72%
Lerner 20926 6.26%
Zou 15673 4.69%
That's a gap of 1156 votes between Giles and Siddiqui. I'd bet that the top 4 (who get the 4-year terms) and the 5th place finisher (who gets a 2-year term) are pretty well set.
The final unofficial results are now in and there is no change in the relative standing of the school board candidates. Siddiqui narrowed the difference between her and Giles to 1149 votes. The only mystery remaining is who gets to fill the coming Sigaty vacancy.
