New Leadership on Affordable Housing
County Exec Ken Ulman is putting together his team and has decided on new leadership the Department of Housing and Community Development. The Sun has a great article on this. Based on what the article says this seems like two great choices. Both the new Director Stacy Spann and the new Deputy Director Tom Carbo have a deep understanding of the county and extensive experience working on affordable housing issues. Stacy Spann also brings the experience of growing up in affordable housing in the county. It is time for new ideas and more creativity in dealing with achieving a full range of housing in our county that reflects county household incomes and it sounds like Stacy Spann and Tom Carbo might be just the right people to do it. Here is hoping.

I thought it was interesting that it was not noted that the only commission member quoted and only person not happy, Michael G. Riemer, is a Republican.
Has anyone thought to survey the existing apartment stock in Howard County, as to price and availability, so we have a snapshot of how much pre-existing affordable housing there is in Howard Co.? Or is the idea to make purchasing housing afforable only? Also do we know how many families are in sub-standard housing and where there are opportunities to use the housing code to force landlords to upgrade?
No one in HC seems to want apartments near them. Look at the Font Hill crowd.
What about the notion that all affordable housing has to be in same building? Montgomery County can spread it out, why all of a sudden can't we?
