The Election Year Twist

Have you seen the front page story of the April 6th, 2006 Howard County Times entitled Smoking Bill Sparks Questions? The first paragraph is one word “Puzzled.” That is the reaction of Earle Eldridge, the author of the article, about County Council Chairman Christopher Merdon introducing a bill which would ban smoking in most public places in the county. Why is Eldridge “puzzled”, because Merdon’s bill is almost identical to the bill he helped kill a couple of months ago, and on top of that Merdon doesn’t really support the bill he is introducing. So what is going on here? Well election years make some elected officials twist themselves into strange positions, like a Kamasutra for politicians, but not as much fun!

Demos must be a product of Baltimore public schools. And it's obvious Demos needs to take a remedial English reading class. Any 10-year-old learning disabled child could read the second paragraph of my story and understand that puzzled was the reaction of Howard county election officials to Merdon's re-introduction of the smoking bill. But alas, the second paragraph must have been to complicated for Demos, who must be a Matt Drudge-wannabe spewing his ignorant rants skewed to his trailer park beliefs. Read the story fool! Read the story fool! Like Rush Limbaugh, you shot the messenger because you don't like the facts. Get a life and stop jerking off on this blog.

Quandoque Bonus Dormitat Homerus.

I stand corrected. The first paragraph of the article was an expression of puzzlement not of Mr. Eldridge, but of “several Howard County officials” to Mr. Merdon’s smoking ban bill. We do not know what Mr. Eldridge thinks of this situation, except that it is important to report on it. However, the comment by the writer, who may or may not be Mr. Eldridge, missed the whole point of my post. Mr. Merdon’s actions are based on a political calculus which has tied him in knots. He must introduce a bill which he helped to defeat in the past and he doesn’t support now, in order to position himself for the upcoming election. The additional ad hominem attacks on me by the writer “Eldridge” are below comment. I suspect, though, that the writer is a supporter of Mr. Merdon.
